The talk focuses on the problem of sustainable access to medicines in the context of South Africa's HIV/AIDS pandemic. After giving a brief background to the present pandemic Professor Klug will discuss the various conditions; legal, political and social that undermine the ability of the health system to ensure a sustainable supply of needed medicines. He will also evaluate a range of arguments that have been made to either justify the existing structure of medicine supply or to deny that patents and other legal provisions are at all relevant to the problem of access to medicines or the failure to adequately address the ongoing crisis.
