Kevin Molloy, RN, is a patient navigator for the Rapid City Regional Hospital-based Walking Forward program. The Walking Forward program reflects an initiative via the Cancer Disparity Research Partnership mechanism at the NCI, and the UW Paul C. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center is a collaborative partner.The program relies on a Patient Navigator and trained community research representatives to serve as lay health advisors to community members/patients/families. Native cancer patients meet with the Patient Navigator as part of an initial consultation with the research oncologist to assess social support systems, cultural beliefs and values, and logistical issues that need addressing in order for successful patient participation in cancer treatment, including clinical trial opportunities.
