Amit Acharya, PhD speaks about various dental informatics research, education, and information technology initiatives at Marshfield Clinic. His research interests lies in connection between oral-systemic diseases and the design of terminology models, information models, and decision support systems.

In January 1995, the US Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the US National Academy of Sciences released a report, Dental Education at the Crossroads: Challenges and Change. This IOM report called for strong cohesion between medicine and dentistry. The IOM report states that "Dentistry will and should become more closely integrated with medicine and the health care system on all levels: patient care, research, information technology, and education.”

Even after a decade and a half, such integration is far from being completely realized. However, as electronic health records become more widespread as a result of federal mandate and along with the many recent oral and systemic health research, the feasibility of integrating medical and dental care, research, information technology and education are being explored by many healthcare organizations. Marshfield Clinic is clearly a leader in this aspect and many initiatives are currently under way to achieve cohesive integration of medicine and dentistry on many levels. Dr. Acharya will be talking about the various Dental Informatics Research and Education and Information Technology initiatives at Marshfield Clinic.
