Amit Acharya PhDDr. Amit Acharya is currently a Dental Informatics Scientist at the Biomedical Informatics Research Center at Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation in Wisconsin where he leads the Dental Informatics research and education initiatives. Dr. Acharya played a key role in the integration of the Marshfield Clinic's Electronic Dental Record with in the existing Electronic Health Record environment.
Dr. Acharya earned a Bachelors of Dental Surgery from Bangalore University, India. After practicing dentistry for a couple of years, he decided to explore his technical curiosity by pursuing a Masters in Computer Science from Western Kentucky University. With a clinical and technical background, he chose to develop expertise in the field of Biomedical Informatics to deal with the several ongoing challenges in healthcare. Towards that end, he obtained a doctoral degree in Biomedical Informatics from the University of Medicine and Dentistry at New Jersey. In his previous role, Dr. Acharya served as a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Dental Informatics and Department of Biomedical Informatics at the School of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh where he developed an open source standard reference Dental Information Model (DIM) for addressing what an electronic dental record should contain and it should be structured.
Dr. Acharya's research interest lies in connection between oral-systemic diseases, design and architecture of electronic health records with focus on electronic dental records, developing clinical decision supports and expert systems, information modeling and developing ontologies and terminologies, principles of evidence based practices and knowledge development and representation. He is interested in developing and implementing effective clinical systems and applications that will bring the practice of medicine and dentistry closer, reduce cost and help streamline the process of delivering healthcare.
