Troubleshooting

Why won't the video play after logging in?

After logging in make sure to hit the Play Video link again. It only works after you are logged in.

Why can't my browser open the video?

Make sure you have the appropriate media player installed on your computer. See How do I get a copy of QuickTime? or How do I get a copy of Windows Media Player? depending on what type of video you are trying to watch.

I have the latest version of Quicktime, but the video still doesn't play.

If you are using Internet Explorer, sometimes the settings are not set up the way that is needed. Make the following changes:

If you open Internet Explorer and go to "Tools", "Internet Options" you will see the below window. Click on the "Advanced" tab and make sure BOTH checkboxes are checked under "HTTP 1.1 settings" I had to add the second checkbox to use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections.

The audio plays, but all I see is a pink or green screen in Quicktime.

A likely cause of that is a hardware accereration incompatibility with Quicktime and your video card.

  1. Go to Start->Control Panel->Quicktime Settings (or just Quicktime)
  2. select "Video Settings" from the pop-up menu. (or from the advanced tab)
  3. select "Safe Mode (GDI Only)"
  4. Restart your computer to make the new setting take hold

If that doesn't produce good results then you should go back to that screen and select "DirectX" instead of "Safe mode (GDI only) and uncheck the box that says, "Enable DirectDraw acceleration".

Why is the video or audio choppy?

The videos require a high speed internet connection and can be choppy if the connection isn't fast enough. You should have a connection of at least 768 kbps. Most Cable modems and DSL should be sufficient. Be aware that sometimes the speed that your connection is getting is below the advertised rate. See the next question to determine how fast your connection speed is.

How can I tell what my connection speed is?

You can get a free test at http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/.

How do I play the videos?

Medical students at the UW are required to login to view their lecture captures. To sign in, click on the "Sign In" link on the upper right corner of the site. If you are a registered user enter your username and password at this time If you are not a registered user, click on "Signup as a New User" to create a username and password.

What format are the videos in?

Some of these videos are in a QuickTime format and some are in a Windows Media Player format. The format of a particular video is noted on the video Information page (i.e. the page that describes the videos and has a link to play it).

Alerts / RSS

Get notified when new videos are added to the Video Library.

The Video Library uses a technology called "RSS" that allows you to "subscribe" and be automatically notified when a new video is added to the Library.

The RSS "feed" for subscribing to new videos is: http://videos.med.wisc.edu/videoLibrary.xml

Email Alerts

Thunderbird

Thunderbird is a free email client that allows you to create an RSS folder similar to your In-Box. That way, when a new video is added, your Video Library folder will show new videos, just like your In-Box shows new messages.
