R. Wicks
View description
This video is intended to be viewed by those affiliated with the University of Wisconsin Only! Thank you. One of the greatest gifts persons in the health care professions can share with others is a sense of their own peace. However, they cannot share what they do not have. By discussing psychological approaches to secondary stress (the pressures experienced in reaching out to others), Wicks offers insights into how physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, chaplains, and other health care professionals/executives can extend their warmth to others without losing their own inner fire in the process. Topics include: “unlearning;” maintaining a sense of perspective; ordinariness; the circle of supportive and challenging friends needed in health care; balance; passion; strong self-awareness; developing a self-care protocol; applying positive psychology in the clinician’s own life; and the necessity of appreciating the building blocks of mindfulness.
